As a weaver and a walker I am out exploring in the city where I live. Foraging for ideas, images, motifs and materials. I make ink from fallen willow branches and head out into the street with huge sheets of paper to make prints of bell telephone company and storm sewer covers to incorporate into my work. I collect walnuts from backyard giants dropping their abundance. I grow milkweed plants to support monarch butterflies and collect the stems to make thread I can incorporate into my weavings.
I weave together the mundane and the mysteries of water, rain, fertility and utilities I encounter on my urban walks. I use ikat or tie dye techniques to transform the solid metal covers into fuzzy soft panels of fabric. The materials and process are important to my work. I tie resists, dye the thread, unwrap the resists to reveal the image, dress the loom and weave a mix of natural fibers into a unique hand woven interpretation of my urban landscape.
